Faris gets starting nod at UConn

Former Heritage Christian forward Kelly Faris appears to have earned a spot in the starting lineup at UConn this season as a sophomore. The 5’11 guard will be expected to do a bit of everything for the No. 1 ranked Huskies, as the UConn roster has been hit with some critical backcourt injuries.

In their exhibition game against D-II Franklin Pierce on Thursday, Faris did not disappoint in her first collegiate start, logging 11 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 1 turnover in 30 minutes of play.

Head coach Geno Auriemma says Faris might be the most fundamentally well-rounded player he has, according to the Hartford Courant.

With her expanded role on the team, Faris will be expected to contribute more as the Huskies continue to establish themselves as the elite standard of college women’s basketball. UConn is riding back-to-back national championships and a 78-game win streak into this season, but with the graduation loss of some heavy hitters in both the post and backcourt, the Huskies will still have something to prove. Faris will be an integral part of any success UConn might have this year.

Another exhibition game and a season opener against Holy Cross are on tap before the big showdown with AP No. 2 Baylor and post phenom Brittney Griner on Tuesday, November 16 (ESPN2) in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

Great article on Kelly. There is no doubt that she will stepup and do whatever her team needs her to do. Kelly has always been able to do all aspects of the game and is very unselfish doing it. Good luck Kelly and the Lady Huskies.
