Tomorrow the IHSAA plans to announce where the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals will be held for 2011. In the running are the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne and Indiana State University Hulman Center (left) in Terre Haute.

Terre Haute is touting a possible edge when the final decision is made due to its strong fan following of women’s basketball at Indiana State. ISU facility representatives also believe they have an attractive package for the IHSAA to consider.

In the Indianapolis Star, assistant director for business and marketing at the Hulman Center, Jennifer Cook said, “We do very well putting on events like this. Our community would support it and our proposal would make it a very special event for the athletes involved.”

The 38-year-old Hulman Center is the home for both men’s and women’s basketball at Indiana State, with seating capacity for 10,200. The Memorial Coliseum holds 13,000. Attendance for the 2010 four-game session was 12,564, down from 21,522 at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2009.

The IHSAA was very impressed with what Fort Wayne had to offer in their package for last season’s state finals, which included free use of the facility. Unless the Terre Haute option offers a similar type of deal, Fort Wayne may be the repeat host.

Bidders for the 2010 state finals also included Ball State and Indiana University. Terre Haute and Fort Wayne were the only two bids for 2011.
