Thirteen years after leaving Northwest Indiana to pursue her college playing career at Purdue, 1998 Miss Basketball and Lake Central grad Kelly Komara is returning to the Region to take an assistant post at Valparaiso University.

Komara comes to the Crusaders staff after holding a four-year position as video coordinator at Auburn University under her former Purdue coach and mentor, Nell Fortner.

Komara served as a graduate assistant at Auburn for the 2004-2005 season, and then spent one season as an assistant at Northwestern University in 2006-2007 before returning back to Auburn to take on her most recent duties as video coordinator.

A 2002 grad at Purdue, Komara helped the Boilermakers to Purdue’s 1999 National Championship run as a freshman, and a runner-up finish in 2001.

Komara becomes VU’s sole female coaching staff member alongside head coach Keith Freeman, associate head coach Greg Kirby and assistant Steve Helm.
