Winds of change for D-I WBB staffs in Indiana

More so than in recent recollection, 2010 seems to be a year of change for support staff at a number of Division I women’s basketball programs in Indiana. Spring always brings a slew of coaching changes around the country, as head coaches get fired and hired, with the effects trickling down to support staff. But this year, head coaching positions at D-I Indiana programs are pretty solid with the support staff making the moves.

We reported earlier this week that Butler hired two new assistants — Tisha Hill and Alex Webster — after the departure of assistants Seph Hatley and Angel Mason. But the Bulldogs aren’t the only team that will see new faces on the sidelines this upcoming season. Most of those faces have yet to be determined.

  • It was recently announced that Tara Miller (right) has taken the third assistant position at IPFW vacated by Hilary O’Connell, who will be pursuing other avenues outside of basketball. Miller, a North Harrison grad, is beginning her college coaching career after playing three years at Butler as a transfer from Indiana. IPFW has another opening on its staff with the hiring of Webster at Butler. Webster was the IPFW lead assistant and recruiting coordinator for the past two years. Her replacement has not yet been named. More:  NH grad Miller joins IPFW women’s staff – Corydon Democrat;  IPFW adds basketball assistant coach – News Sentinel
  • Long-time Ball State assistant Lisa McDonald has left the Cardinals to pursue other career opportunities in her home state of Arizona. McDonald was a well-liked assistant who weathered the departure of former head coach Tracy Roller and brought stability and continuity to the program that she loved and played for during turbulent times. No replacement for McDonald has yet been named. More: McDonald Leaves WBB To Pursue A Different Career Path – Ball State Sports
  • Five year assistant Angie Potthoff at Notre Dame has moved to a new position on staff, creating an opening for an Irish post coach. The job has been posted on the Notre Dame job board with an anonymous “preferred candidate” already with a foot in the door for the job. An interesting possible candidate for that position would be former ND great Ruth Riley (North Miami). Riley currently plays for the WNBA Silver Stars, but after nine years in the pros, Riley might be ready for a move to the coaching ranks. • Indiana associate head coach Katie Abrahmson-Henderson was recently named the new head coach at the University of Albany. Coach “Abe” spent two years on the Hoosiers staff before taking the head job in New York. Those familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference will remember that the seasoned veteran was the head coach at Missouri for five years. No replacement for the Indiana opening has yet been named. • IUPUI has an opening on its staff again, which seems to be an annual ritual for the Jaguars. Third assistant Chanté Bowman, who played at Kentucky, left the IUPUI staff during the season and the position has yet to be filled. Bowman was hired just about three months after assistant Eric Schellhammer was hired. Schellhammer left prior to the start of the 2009-10 season.

We’ll keep you updated as these positions become filled.
